I hope it helps some.ĭepends on your interests then. This is all just my opinion based on my experience. You may find an even better job that interests you more than mechanics or stick with 11B. Maybe do 11B for a few years, you can always re-class. I had a kid tell me in my last unit 'I became an MLRS operator (dude that shoots rockets) because, where the hell else could I ever do it? I plan to re-class (change jobs) after 3 years and work in IT so I can use that experience when I get out." It honestly made sense to me and it seems like maybe a route you could use. Most (because every unit is different) mechanics don't pull many duties, get a fair amount of awards and recognition, and in many ways don't have to play the game the same way (we have power in the field, we are usually located around the cooks/food, and we do most of our job driving something = less " ruck marching." There's another aspect to this, and this is completely opinion based from a person who obviously choose maintenance I honestly enjoy it. I've been maintenance my whole career and yes, we work late hours. 11Bs have pretty good work hours when not in the field, even while on details. I feel 11Bs have a lot of cool job positions they could get and have always been envious of that. However, being an 11B, you could be light or mechanized, depends where you're needed. Mechanized infantry is centered heavily around vehicle usage, therefore maintenance heavy. I've been in 23 years and never heard of any correlation between mountaineering and diesel usage.
